GEOSYSTEM Software Newsletter

April, 2008

Hello from GEOSYSTEM Software! Since it's been quite a long time since we last sent out our e-mail newsletter, you might be wondering who we are and why you're getting this e-mail:

GEOSYSTEM Software produces and sells programs for plotting boring logs, for calculating and reporting results from common geotechnical tests, and for storage and reporting of concrete and cement products strength test results. We have been in the software business since 1984.

Occasionally (just several times a year) we'll send out an e-mail note to let our customers know about upcoming software releases, newly posted program patches and interesting technical documents. The newsletter is sent to e-mail addresses we've received from demo and support requests and from our newsletter signup form. (We don't purchase e-mail lists and we do not "scrape" e-mail addresses from web pages.) If you're not interested in our products, please reply to this e-mail with "Remove" in the subject line.

News:

New Moisture-Density (Proctor) Program

We're pleased to announce the release of version 4.0 of the GEOSYSTEM Moisture-Density program (Proctor). The new program includes a number of added features, including:

If you've licensed an older GEOSYSTEM Proctor program you qualify for a special upgrade price for the new release.

Introducing LabSuite4

We've recently added a new package to our product line: LabSuite4 features integrated support for grain size distribution and Atterberg limits tests, moisture-density testing, soil classification calculations via USCS (ASTM D 2487), AASHTO M 145, USDA, Burmister and Australian Standard 1726 (and other state DOT classification systems which can be downloaded from our website).

The new program greatly simplifies the test data entry workflow because users no longer need to jump between programs to enter testing data and check classification results: All necessary data entry is done within a single program. Soil classifications are calculated automatically without requiring any user feedback, and the resulting classifications automatically appear on all Atterberg, grain size and moisture-density reports.

Licensees of our older moisture-density, grain size or Atterberg programs receive a special upgrade discount when licensing the new LabSuite4 package.

You can find more about the software here:

New Soil Classifiers for CLSuite4 and LabSuite

Many state Departments of Transportation use their own soil classification methods, which are usually variations of established soil classification procedures; for example, the Illinois Division of Highways and Minnesota Department of Transportation both use textural triangles similar to that used by the USDA classification system; the Maryland SHA and Ohio DOT both use variations of the AASHTO classification method.

CLSuite4 and LabSuite users can now download free plugins that add support for these methods to their software. Currently we've posted plugins to add the Ohio DOT and Minnesota DOT classification systems; we'll be adding additional classification systems in the coming months.

The new plugins are available here:

Notable Program Updates

We've added a very handy new feature to our GrainSize, CLSuite4, LabSuite, Proctor and SHEAR programs: Selection Lists for the programs' "Sample Info." windows.

With the new feature you can set up a list of standard entries for fields such as "Tested By", "Checked By", etc. so that you can select -- with a single mouse click -- from a list of personnel instead of typing in the same names over and over for every test you enter.

Selection Lists can also be used to easily insert boilerplate text into, for example, the testing remarks field. This can be very handy if the same basic text is always typed into a particular data entry field.

To use the new feature, first install the latest update for your software:

Swell/Consolidation Data Acquisition Importers

We've just released a new data acquisition importer for the Swell/consolidation program that reads data acquisition files created by Hogentogler GeoStar® consolidometers. CONS licensees can install the new importer by installing the latest program update from here.

The new update also has a "secret" new importer for GeoTAC data files. If your current .CTF or .DAT importer freezes CONS during the import process (this happens on some Windows XP systems due to interference from other running applications), install the CONS update and select "Custom Importer Provided by GEOSYSTEM" when asked to select a data acquisition importer.

After installing the update, proceed with the data acquisition import as normal (create a new CONS test then click on the "Acquire" button), then, from the new dialog that pops up, drop down the "Files of type" box and select either "GeoTAC .ctf file import" or "GeoTAC .dat file import", then pick your file from the list. (Please check your first couple of imported tests very carefully, as the new importer is still in beta testing.)

Clients using the Humboldt Minilogger system take note: we'll be adding support for importing files created with Humboldt's licensed Oedometer module (currently the importer only reads files created with their free "User Defined Test" module). If you need the new importer, please take a moment to fill out our support request form: In the "Question" field, let us know that you need the licensed Oedometer module import support.
