GEOSYSTEM Software Newsletter

December, 2008

Hello from GEOSYSTEM Software! Since it's been quite a long time since we last sent out our e-mail newsletter, you might be wondering who we are and why you're getting this e-mail:

GEOSYSTEM Software produces and sells programs for plotting boring logs, for calculating and reporting results from common geotechnical tests, and for storage and reporting of concrete and cement products strength test results. We have been in the software business since 1984.

Occasionally (once or twice a year) we'll send out an e-mail note to let our customers know about upcoming software releases, newly posted program patches and interesting technical documents. The newsletter is sent to e-mail addresses we've received from demo and support requests and from our newsletter sign up form. (We don't purchase e-mail lists and we do not "scrape" e-mail addresses from web pages.) If you're not interested in our products, please reply to this e-mail with "Remove" in the subject line.

News:

New Downloadable State DOT Particle Classification, Soil Classification and Proctor Test Method Files

We've been adding to our support for various State DOT particle classification, Proctor test method and soil classification variations.

LabSuite, CLSuite and GrainSize licensees can download state DOT gradation specifications from here:

Particle classifications required by various state DOT agencies can be downloaded from here:

Several state Departments of Transportation use their own soil classification methods (although usually variations of the USCS, USDA or AASHTO soil classification procedures). Downloadable support for the Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio Departments of Transportation classification methods are available here:

Our downloadable Proctor test method support is currently limited to the Pennsylvania DOT's PTM-106 method (the software has built-in support for California's CT-216 method). Pennsylvania clients can download the PTM-106 specification from here:

We've also added in support for the 2007 revision to ASTM D 1557 (Modified Proctor) that was released by ASTM after we shipped some early copies of the software. Proctor and LabSuite clients receive the new standard automatically when they install the latest software update from here:

New Swell/Consolidation Data Acquisition File Import Support

We've just released a new data acquisition importer for the Swell/consolidation program that reads data acquisition files created by Humboldt's licensed HMTS Consolidation (Oedometer) test data acquisition module.

This is actually a rare requirement, as most of our customers opt to use Humboldt's free User Defined Test module to acquire their data, but if you've licensed Humboldt's Consolidation module, you can import the spreadsheet files created by the module into CONS for post-processing. To add support, install the latest CONS update from here:

Select the "Humboldt Minilogger (experimental)" option when asked to choose a data acquisition importer.

FYI: Color Logos

In the past, support for printing company logos on reports created by our CBR, GrainSize, Proctor, CLSuite, LabSuite and SHEAR programs was limited to two-color (i.e., black and white) logos only. This tended to produce logos that were somewhat limited in resolution, as even on a black and white printer, grayscale is essential for plotting smooth curves and lines.

The good news is that these programs now support full-color and grayscale logos, and we'll be happy to help any customers -- both those who are already using a monochrome logo with the software and those who are not -- add a color or grayscale logo to their reports.

Here's a web page listing our revised logo requirements:

You can e-mail your logo file(s) to:

Put "Logo Request for (your organization)" in the e-mail Subject line.

From the Developers: LOGDRAFT version 5

We're deep into the process of building the next version of our LOGDRAFT boring log package. The new program, while retaining the same user interface, will have quite a few new capabilities. Here's just a few of the features we're adding:

These are just a few of the many changes that we have planned for the software, which is due for release in the third quarter of next year.

From the Developers: QC-Concrete version 3

We're also hard at work on a new version of the QC-Concrete (Quality Control for Cement Products) program. The new program will be based on Microsoft's .NET framework (our first foray into the .NET world), and will give users other options for storing their testing data besides Microsoft's somewhat unreliable Access databases. We'll have support for SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle and SQL Server Express. (SQL Server Express is a wonderful free database server that is ideal for smaller shops looking to move away from Access. In fact, we like it so much that a copy will be included on the new QC-Concrete program's CD along with detailed server installation instructions.)

The new update also has a "secret" new importer for GeoTAC data files. If your current .CTF or .DAT importer freezes CONS during the import process (this happens on some Windows XP systems due to interference from other running applications), install the CONS update and select "Custom Importer Provided by GEOSYSTEM" when asked to select a data acquisition importer. We'll be showing off the new program in Las Vegas next February at the 2009 World of Concrete show. If you're attending, send us an e-mail for a $25-off discount on an exhibits-only pass (put "WOC Show Discount" in your e-mail Subject line):

From the Developers: Watch This Space!

Pssst! We have one more project in development:

Finally, a Windows version of the CPR (Concrete Performance Report) program!!!

We'll pass along some details (including a few preliminary screenshots) in our next newsletter.
