Combined GrainSize, CLSuite4, LabSuite4 and Proctor Update
This program is a combined updater that will update the version 4.x of
the GEOSYSTEM GrainSize program, the CLSuite4
and LabSuite4 packages, and the Proctor
program. This updates version 4.x only: earlier versions of the
software are not included in the update. You can check your program version
like this: Start your GEOSYSTEM program, open a project, then open an
existing grain size or Proctor test. Next, select "Help" >
"About this Program": If the following dialog says something
like "GEOSYSTEM for Windows Moisture-Density Test Module v. 1.1"
or "GEOSYSTEM Grn-Size Module v. 1.1" then you have an older
version of the software, and you'll want to check this
page for upgrading information.
GS4UPDATE
To install this file: first see if you need it. Start your GEOSYSTEM
for Windows program and open a GrainSize or Proctor test data set (i.e.,
go to the screen that asks for grain size or compaction testing data).
Select "Help" > "About this module". From the following
dialog, click on the "System Info." button. If your program
lists a "Date Generated" earlier than the latest "Build"
date listed in the revisions section below, proceed with the installation.
Shut down your GEOSYSTEM for Windows package. If GEOSYTEM for Windows
is installed onto a network drive, make sure that everyone has shut down
their package. Click on the GS4UPDATE link above, save the file to
your hard disk (it doesn't matter where) then run it (GS4UPDATE.EXE).
GrainSize, CLSuite, LabSuite and Proctor Version 4 Revision History
Build 4.0.0.34 (20.Jun.2008)
- Correction to show the proper units in the Proctor test mold weight flyover hints (previously the hints would always request mold weights in grams, regardless of the user's mold weight units selection).
- Correct a problem that allowed the user to type junk into the Proctor test mold weight units selection box: After entering junk, the program would continually display an error dialog starting with "CONSTNTS.Convert: unknown conversion unit".
- Change the default grain size test type from "Precalculated" to "Cumulative Weight Retained" to better reflect the most common test type required by users. Only affects new program installations.
- Correction of a problem that would cause the program to use 100% of the CPU time (on single-core computers, or 50% on dual-core, etc.) when started by clicking on any sample card link besides GrainSize (e.g., clicking on Proctor, AASHTO, etc. would cause 100% CPU usage).
Build 4.0.0.33 (6.Jun.2008)
- Addition of a new grain size report form called GSASTM.
- Wholesale changes made to the PRSIEVE report form.
- Modification to the "Insert Symbol" dialog (press F9 on any "Sample Info. window) to show a preview of each font in the symbol font list.
- Removal of Windows9x compatibility for exported .EMF reports & summary files.
- Major refactoring to clean/speed up the Windows font handling code. Will not have any visible effect other than a possible slight improvement in report plotting speed.
- On some computers running as a part of a Windows domain environment, program configuration files would not be created in the program's installation directory. Only affects users running a shared copy of the software.
- Modification to properly include the test date on PRSINGLE in cases where the current report page has more than 1 test set to print on it (PRSINGLE only supports one test, so the problem only affected users moving from a multi-testreport without allowing the program to rearrange the report pages to only show one test per page).
- Fix of the PRASTM report form to include the checked-by title on the report.
- Fixed the location of the "Halt" button on fatal error message dialogs so that it does not partially hide the "Retry" button.
- Make the program's error dialog resizeable so that the error message can be read more easily.
- Modification so that the Proctor section of the program does not change the precision of user-entered oversize sieve percentages.
- Removal of the "Calculated Values" Setup panel (under "Grain Size Distribution) when only Proctor is licensed. This panel is not used for Proctor-only installations.
Build 4.0.0.32 (21.Apr.2008)
- Correction of the Proctor data summary report to report the oversize percentage instead of 100-the oversize percentage.
Build 4.0.0.31 (4.Apr.2008)
- Correction of a problem that could cause a program error when plotting any data summary or chart report. The problem was found during a code review and appears to have never caused a crash during program use.
- Small change of the label printed on Proctor test reports to denote corrected test data: Originally the
label read "Oversize correction applied to final results", the new label reads "Oversize Correction
Applied to Final Results". Likewise, "Oversize corr. applied to each test point" was changed to
"Oversize Corr. Applied to Each Test Point". Both labels are also now preceeded by the correction standard,
so that, for example, the new label reads "ASTM D 4718-87 Oversize Corr. Applied to Each Test Point" when
plotting D 4718-corrected test data.
- Addition of selection list support to the sample info. window. (Right-click on a data field and select "Make a Selection List".)
Build 4.0.0.30 (29.Feb.2008)
- Correction of the label shown for the oversize percentage on moisture-density data summaries for tests
where an oversize percentage was entered (or grain size test data were entered), but no oversize correction was
performed, either because the test specification did not require correction, or because no correction data (i.e.,
bulk specific gravity and/or oversize moisture) were entered. The label read "Percent retained" but
the value listed was the percent passing.
- Changed the GSHYDROM report form to the more flexible sample identification labeler (which will decide
whether to show "Source" or "Location", instead of showing both and leaving one blank).
- Changed the GSSINGLE report form to add D90.
- Modified the grain size and Atterberg test summary reports to show the soil classification selected
through the "Preferred classification system" box on the system's configuration dialog.
- Fix of a problem that would cause the user's current color plotting selections and preferred classification method to not be reflected in the sample reports shown when the "Preview Forms" button was clicked on the Proctor test report preview screen.
- Addition of support for downloadable soil classification plugins.
Build 4.0.0.29 (11.Feb.2008)
- Fix of bug that prevented the oversize percentage from being transferred from a sample's
grain size test to its Proctor oversize correction data.
- Removal of the option to have different soil layer and sample material descriptions if the GEOSYSTEM LD4 program is not licensed. This change should eliminate a great deal of confusion for lab. software licensees.
Build 4.0.0.28 (27.Dec.2007)
- Added the capability to download new particle classification systems and specification envelopes from our website.
- Added two new forms: GSAGG1 and GSAGG3 were designed for aggregate producers, and omit material description and soil classification information.
Build 4.0.0.27 (1.Nov.2007)
- Modifications made to the material description using the USCS "Add group name to your soil description" box and Burmister "Add ID or symbol to your soil description" boxes were not showing up on boring logs.
Build 4.0.0.26 (20.Oct.2007)
- Addition of support for color logos. THIS WILL NOT affect existing clients; only new clients submitting a logo
that is in color can take advantage of this modification.
- Modification to work around a Windows Vista bug that causes an error dialog to appear when displaying help
screens.
- Correction of a bug that would sometimes show a "Sieve opening list: (Default opening sizes)" line on
summary reports. The "Sieve opening list:" line should not have appeared unless a custom opening size list
was chosen for the test.
- Added #450, #500 and #635 to the program's list of supported sieves.
- Addition of Windows Vista as a supported operating system; removal of Windows98 and WindowsME.
The software should still run under Windows98 and WindowsME, but an "unsupported" warning will
be shown to the user.
- Modification to the error window shown when insufficient or bad data is entered: The window now has an "Ignore" button.
- On reports that include "Source of Sample:" and "Sample Number:" fields (e.g., GSSINGLE), shown on two lines, the ordering
of the two are now reversed: "Source of Sample:" prints above "Sample Number:".
- For Atterberg reports, the 5th marker in the LIMLAND report was not centered in its box in the table of test results.
- Correction of a bug that would corrupt the user-defined specification envelope file if the file was created by version 1.x of the software (the older version of the program) and
an envelope included a sieve that wasn't valid (e.g., a negative opening size dimension, random text or a non-standard sieve number).
- Addition of support for moving user-editable files (such as the specification envelope list) from the program directory to a user-writeable directory. This change was required for Vista compatibility, and is used by the program installer when installing onto Vista computers. The option is not yet available to end-users.
- The specification envelope editing dialog now presents the list of specification
envelopes available for modification in sorted order.
- Addition of support for outputting chart and data summary reports as bitmaps in .PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format.
- The program is now uncompressed, meaning that it will take longer to load from network drives. This change should make for quicker load times for local drives.
- Correction of a problem that would keep specification envelopes with names staring with "(" (e.g., (A Series) Spec. Envelope) from being applied.
Build 4.0.0.25 (27.Jul.2007)
- Correct a problem introduced in version 4.0.0.24 that would cause error messages to be displayed when closing the program while the grain size chart is displayed, or when changing from the grain size chart to a different window.
- Rearrange navigation pane on the program's Setup dialog when only GrainSize has been licensed. The change is so the dialog matches the screenshots in the program's manual.
- Fix: the specification envelope editor did not accept sieve sizes in millimeters.
Build 4.0.0.24 (23.Jul.2007)
- Change the section titles on summary reports to show white on gray instead of black on gray. The change was made
to make the reports more readable when faxed.
- Addition of selection of the chart report form and the option of autocombining tests onto reports from a menu ("Report") in addition to toolbar buttons
- New installations will display a message indicating that the software is no longer supported on Windows98 and WindowsME.
- Change so that the minimum width of minor chart gridlines is 1/600 inch. Helps when printing reports on high-resolution printers.
Build 4.0.0.22 (20.Feb.2007)
- Still more internal changes necessary to support custom reports developed for different clients. No visible changes have been made since version 4.0.0.19.
Build 4.0.0.21 (30.Jan.2007)
- More internal changes necessary to support custom reports developed for different clients. No visible changes have been made since version 4.0.0.19.
Build 4.0.0.20 (09.Jan.2007)
- Internal changes necessary to support a custom report form developed for a client. No visible changes have been made.
Build 4.0.0.19 (05.Jan.2007)
- Corrected a misspelling (LIQUD LIMIT) in the GSCHART report form.
- Workaround for a nasty Microsoft XP update mess that stops the operating system from opening any help files stored on network drives.
The result of the idiotic Microsoft modification is that programs stored on network drives cannot open their own help files.
- Corrects a bug that caused some of the items shown on the currently-selected grain size report form
to not be available for use with the GDM Data Summary and Export tool.
- Corrects a bug preventing new projects from reusing the disclaimer selected for the last project edited.
- Introduced a change to speed up the report printing process by not requiring the program to consult GDM before storing data used just for the report.
Build 4.0.0.18 (16.Nov.2006)
- Modified the Wentworth (Phi) chart to plot Phi vs. log(probability) vs. Phi instead of Phi vs. percent.
- When changing data entry screens, getting an error window which the user ignores, then going back to the original screen that produced the error, would result in the error message not being displayed anymore.
- Modified the USCS and AS 1726 screens to provide a warning message if Atterberg data are not entered.
- Correct Phi chart scale for metric projects (scale was plotting -log2(sizemm) instead of -log2(sizeinches)).
- Modified the log(probability) chart to calculate curve percentages and diameters based upon a log(probability) curve instead of a curve constructed of straight percentages.
- Swapped the Phi scale left-for-right.
- Make sure the D-value table shown in the grain size chart review screen has enough room to handle 100+mm particle sizes.
- Adding or deleting shaping points on the particle size curve did not update the on-screen display of D-values and particle percentages. (The final reports were correct.)
- Workaround of an obscure situation where Grain Size for Windows version 1.x allowed a user to enter pre-split weights in pounds and post-split weights in grams. The new program detects this situation by noting that the pre-split weights are less than the post-split weights (an impossible situation if all weights are entered in grams) and automatically converts all pre-split weights to grams.
- Correct a bug that allowed users to enter a blank value into the "Minimum D60 value to report" setup dialog field. Entering a blank value would crash the program.
- Move some setup options if GrainSize is licensed without licensing the Classification Suite package.
Build 4.0.0.17 (31.Aug.2006)
- Corrected a problem with entering precalculated sieve data: if the user entered a sieve, but did not enter a
corresponding percent finer value, the program would display a completely blank error dialog.
- Added a #270 sand/silt split version of the USDA classification system, and the ISSS classification system.
- Made some changes to try to avoid a program crash when switching from the grain size chart preview window to any other window.
- Properly save any hydrometer settings that were changed during the current session as defaults for the next session.
- Included the Burmister Soil Symbol in the list of calculated classification results shown when mousing over the Burmister link on a sample data card.
Build 4.0.0.16 (24.May.2006)
- The changes to the soil classifiers introduced in version 4.0.0.14 caused user-entered USCS and AASHTO
classifications to be erased if there was not enough data for the program to produce its own classification.
This has been changed so that user-entered classifications are not erased.
Note that this change has one side effect: Version 4.0.0.14 would erase the USCS and AASHTO classifications
for existing tests that should not have had classifications assigned because Atterberg data were not entered;
this version does not erase the classifications.
-
The USCS and AS1726 classification data entry screens would not properly update the classification when
an oven-dried liquid limit value was entered. This *did not* result in incorrect classification values on
chart reports; only the on-screen display was incorrect.
Build 4.0.0.15 (15.May.2006)
- Corrected a problem that would cause the message 'Error 126: Could not open dll "python24.dll"'
to be displayed when previewing or printing any grain size reports after either 'Soil Analysis Report'
or 'Organic Soil Report' was selected as the report form. These forms were not compatible with GrainSize
version 4, and should not have been shipped on the CD. The update deletes the forms so that you can get back to
the GrainSize preview screen: when you do so, select a different report form to complete the fix.
-
Corrected several problems that cropped up when running the software under a Windows Regional Settings configuration
that used a comma as the "Decimal symbol", including one problem that caused a crash as soon as the
program was loaded.
Build 4.0.0.14 (11.May.2006)
- Addition of a calculator to the chart preview screen. Selecting "Curve" > "Calculator"
displays a dialog that allows the user to calculate the percent smaller than a given particle size, or the particle
size corresponding to a given percent retained.
- Modifications to the Burmister classification system. For details, call +1 970/223-8788 x111
- Correction of a small problem that cropped up during previewing of the chart report if a new report
form was selected while the user was modifying a report page's figure number.
- The previous version of GrainSize treated a blank meniscus correction as valid (i.e., 0), while the new
version does not. Changed the code used to read in files created with the previous version to replace a blank
meniscus correction with a "0".
- CHANGE TO THE ASTM AND AASHTO CLASSIFICATIONS: Previously the system would classify soil without Atterberg
data being entered; now this will not be done except in the case where the soil can be classified without limits
data (i.e., GP, GW, SP, SW and AASHTO's A-8).
Build 4.0.0.13 (27.Mar.2006)
- Correct the "Canadian Soil Information System 1982" classification system to properly show the percent sand
- Corrected printing of the "Date" field in the GSCOE report form.
- Addition of a Colloids column to the GSGEODAT report form.
- Corrected some display problems related to editing specification envelopes with inch-sized sieves on a computer configured for metric measurements.
- Correction of a problem that would turn specification envelope printing off after the program's Setup dialog is viewed for the first time.
Build 4.0.0.12 (31.Jan.2006)
- Ampersands would display as underscores in the Identification field on the Burmister classification window.
- Changed the program to remember the hydrometer temperature correction values used for the previously entered hydrometer test and to use those values as a default when a new hydrometer test is entered.
- Corrected a problem that would show an error message indicating "File or path not found: NOPATH\CommonSettings.xml" when changing certain configuration options from the GDM opening screen.
- Corrected a problem that would display "CL-CL" error messages when trying to print chart reports containing tests whose source folders have been deleted.
- When starting a new hydrometer test, the program will default to using the same hydrometer type (151h or 152h) as was used in the previous test.
Build 4.0.0.10 (9.Dec.2005)
- Tests consisting of a #200 wash only, or tests starting in fine sand and ending in silt, would not report a fines percentage.
Build 4.0.0.9 (2.Dec.2005)
- When used as a part of the new CLSuite4 package, Version 4.0.0.8 display General Protection Fault messages during data entry. This version corrects the problem.
- The option to turn off plotting of specification envelopes on the chart report did not work.
- Plotting a curve that begins within a gravel, or sand division and ends exactly at the end of the same
division would cause the program report the percent smaller than the end of the curve. For example, if the curve
begins at the #60 sieve and ends at the #200, the program would not report anything underneath the Silt and Clay
boxes plotted under the chart.
Build 4.0.0.8 (4.Nov.2005)
- Modification to correctly display the GSHYDROM form. This form was not shipped with the software, but was
available on our website for downloading and use with the previous grain size program.
Build 4.0.0.7 (31.Oct.2005)
- The sieve test results table could sometimes run off the right side of the summary report page.
Build 4.0.0.6 (17.Oct.2005)
- Modification to "Auto. Combine" feature to delete reports duplicated by the bug fixed in version 4.0.0.4.
- Addition of the CanSIS particle size breakdown.
- Added the ability to turn off the menu option to add a shaping point.
Build 4.0.0.5 (6.Oct.2005)
- Correct an error message displayed when the Preview Forms button is clicked.
- Addition of the Ohio Department of Transportation particle size breakdown.
Build 4.0.0.4 (16.Sep.2005)
- Outputting a summary or chart to PDF, XML or DXF, while viewing a test report on-screen: if the
"Select an appropriate ending for this filename" box was checked, the wrong sample's information (i.e., sample number,
material source, etc.) would be used to create the filename.
- Fix of a problem that would cause duplicated report pages to show up when moving tests around to different
pages.
- Fix of a problem that would cause the Data Summary and Export program to crash with a
"Subscript out of range" error.
- Add of support for having a space between the "#" and the sieve number when entering numbered sieves.
- Some report forms may not have shown the sample's material description.
- When working on the list of chart report pages, if the Autocombine button is used the list of pages may not
be accessible because the scrollbar becomes disabled.
- Modified the chart report pages list panel to keep the list of pages sorted at all times -- modifying
a figure number of moving a test from one report to another resorts the list in alphabetical order.
- Fixed the option to reshuffle the order in which tests print on a given report page.
- Material description changes made on the Sample Info. screen will now always affect the
material description shown on the Data Manager sample card, unless LD4 is licensed.
Build 4.0.0.3 (29.Aug.2005)
- Using the "USCS, list fines instead of silts/clay" classification, the program would show an error message
when if a particle distribution curve ending within the silt interval was printed (gave
"TGSSiltBlock.Plot: Misssing SILT division" message).
- Help was not working in build 4.0.0.2.
- Addition of support for the Australian Standard 1726 classification system.
- Pressing Enter on the last prompt of the Sample Info. screen now automatically displays the Sieve Test screen
- Several changes to the test report selection process to a) fix moving tests onto a different report page, b) prevent a
program error caused by dragging a report page's test slot not filled in with an actual test and c) fix of option to rearrange
tests on a report page.
- Fix of small problem that allowed the user to hit Enter on the last row of the hydrometer readings grid
and proceed to insert multiple blank hydrometer readings rows.
- Symbols inserted into any of the fields on the Sample Info. window using the program's (undocumented) F9
symbol insert dialog could not be copied with the "Edit" > "Copy Data" and
"Edit" > "Paste Data" menu selections.
- Shrunk the margin between "Sample Number" and "Depth" on the chart reports to fit more
data. Also abbreviated labels such as "Sample Number" as "Sample No." if necessary to fit more data.
- Addition of warning if the user attempts to enter what the program thinks is bad split data. Motivated by
users who were entering the initial sample weight on every row of the sieve test data entry grid.
- Fix of a problem pasting data into the Sample Info. window fields: before the fix the cursor would not
be placed at the end of the pasted data.
- Adjust the size of the fonts used on the chart reports to take into account the smaller page width left after
a disclaimer is added to the report left border. Corrects problems such as the "Project No." label overprinting
the actual project number.
- Chart reports plotted with a Wentworth (Phi) scale did not properly draw the fractions table (some vertical
table lines were bold that should not have been, and vice versa).
- Some selections for the minimum and maximum particle diameter on the semi-log particle distribution chart
would not be properly drawn. For example, selecting .002mm as the chart's minimum diameter would cause the chart to
display starting at .003mm.
- Modification to show a limited amout of data in the Data Manager hint window instead of showing a huge hint window.
Requires an upgrade to GDM2 or LD4.
- Compression of the GrainSize.OVR program file to 30% of its original size to give better loading times over
network shares.
Build 4.0.0.2 (3.May.2005)
- Fix of a bug that discards hygroscopic moisture data if a linear temperature correction was used.
- Addition of USDA and AASHTO classification systems.
- Addition of export of PER2M (percentage at 2 microns)
